Conversations With a 4 Year Old

From the time my 4 and 1/2 year old boy wakes up until he falls asleep, he asks questions. If he’s not asking questions, he’s carrying on conversations with anyone who will listen. It’s amazing to see his mind at work, but I’ll admit that I don’t have the answer as often as I’d like.

In just one day, I had all of these conversations with Lucas.

Where is heaven? Is heaven higher than outer space? How do we get to heaven? Is it in one of the clouds? I don’t really know where heaven is, but I like to imagine it’s up high in the sky.

Do kids live in heaven? Are there mommies and daddies in heaven? Break my heart, dear child. Yes, there are kids and mommies and daddies there, but that’s not a sad thing! That’s a happy thing! They get to live with Jesus! Isn’t that wonderful! I hope he didn’t see my tears.

Will I go to heaven? Will you be in heaven with me? Heartbreaking. I sure hope so, sweetheart.

Did God make houses? Well, sort of. He made the trees, which we turn into wood to build houses. And he made people who build the houses. So yes, God built houses. Sort of.

How will the baby in your belly get out? Will he come out through your mouth? Or your belly button? Anyone want to have the facts of life talk with my four year old? Lucas, I will ask the doctor at my next visit and let you know what she says. He hasn’t asked again.

Why won’t you let me have marshmallows? Are there too many ingredients in them? This my friends, left me laughing hysterically in the baking aisle at Kroger. Kids don’t miss anything do they? I couldn’t even answer him I was laughing so hard.

Why isn’t our backyard a water park? We forgot to include that in the package when we were building the house. Sorry, kid.

When I’m 8, how old will Caroline be? Caroline will be 6. You are two years older than her. You will always be two years older than her.

When I’m 12, how old will Caroline be? Caroline will be 10. You are two years older than her. You will always be two years older than her.

When Caroline is 5, how old will I be? Seriously?

When I’m as big as Hunter (his older cousin), will I be as tall as he is? Doubt it kiddo, Hunter’s a giant.

When will I be a grown up like you and daddy? Don’t rush your life away, child.

But I can’t wait to be big!Yes, but I want you to take your sweet time growing up. The older you get, the older I get.

How old are you, mommy? I’m 30 years old.

Wow! That’s a lot! Gee, thanks.

On my next birthday, I want a superhero party. Okay, Lucas. But your birthday is in November. There are lots of people in our family with birthdays before yours.

Okay, but on my next birthday, how old will Caroline be? Kiddo, give mama a break!

A few hours later, I overheard him talking. This isn’t uncommon as he has a big imagination and one imaginary friend named “My fella.” Don’t ask.

Lucas, who are you talking to? Are you talking to your fella?

Nope. My fella moved away to Indiana. I was just talking to myself.

But, mommy? I think I want one of those games that you can play on your T.V. for my birthday, okay? Lucas? What did I say about your birthday? From now on, I don’t want to hear about your birthday again until you are in the Butterfly room at school in September.

Got it.

Mom? When I’m 30 like you are, how old will Caroline be?

That my friends is just one day with my four year old. He keeps me laughing. He keeps me thinking. He keeps me crying. And yes, he drives me crazy sometimes. But I just love his curious little mind!

Can you relate?

Through The Eyes of a Child- Ford Fish

My family is very loyal to Ford Motor Company. We are a Ford family. To say that we owe our family’s livelihood to Ford is the understatement of the century.

Because of this, Lucas can recognize the Ford emblem on cars, dealerships, commercials, factories, letters in the mail, etc. As soon as he sees that bright blue oval, he immediately yells, “Ford!”

Apparently, we’ve never made it a point to explain that there are other car companies out there besides Ford, either.

A few weeks ago, Lucas and I walked through a Target parking lot. He pointed out each Ford car that he saw. We passed several Fords in a row before reaching a car of a different brand. This car’s logo happened to look more like a cross.

“Cross Ford?” He asked.

“No, Lucas. That’s a Chevy.”

“Oh.”

We passed another car.

“Spiderman Ford?”

“No, Lucas. That’s a Toyota.”

“Oh.”

A few days later, we sat behind another car at a red light.

“Batman Ford!” Lucas exclaimed.

“No, Lucas. That’s a Honda.”

“Oh.”

And finally, just the other day, Lucas and I passed a car that had a Christian fish symbol on it.

“Fish Ford?” Lucas asked.

I stifled a giggle and explained to him that it was a sign for Jesus. I could see his wheels turning, but he only responded with his usual, “Oh.”

As we drove home, I could tell his wheels were still spinning. I couldn’t wait to hear what was sure to come out of his mouth at any moment. Just as we were pulling into the driveway, he exclaimed, “Oh, you’re right, Mom. It wasn’t a Fish Ford! It was a Jesus Ford.”

Seriously. Where does this kid come up with such things? I could just gobble him up sometimes!

Through The Eyes of a Child- Summer Funnies

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a “Through the Eyes of a Child.” It’s not for lack of inspiration, that’s for sure. My three and a half year old keeps me laughing through most of my days!

Here are two of his most recent funnies:

**We were headed to a splash park the other day and I was getting a bag together. Lucas said, “Mom, don’t forget the sun scream!”

**If you’ve seen me in person (and in some photos), you know that I have a lot of freckles. I have very fair skin and despite liberal sunscreening (or sun screaming), freckles still cover my face and shoulders. Lucas inherited my fair skin (poor child) and I am crazy obsessive about putting sunscreen on him. Despite my own best efforts, he has a couple of freckles on his nose. I must admit, they are CUTE, but I hope he doesn’t end up looking like me.

Anyway, I completely digressed there. The other day, Mike and I were talking about my freckles, Lucas’s freckles, and freckles in general. During this conversation, I expressed my hatred for my freckles. For the millionth time, my husband assured me that he loved them and thought they were cute. He added, “I think they are hot.”

Our little eavesdropper heard this, absorbed it, and went about his business. About an hour later, Lucas came up to me and asked, “Mom, can I touch your freckles?”

I gave him a curious look, but said, “Sure.”

He put his pointer finger on my nose and touched my freckles.

“Ouch,” He exclaimed, waving his hand back and forth dramatically.

“What?”

“Your freckles are really hot, Mom.”

Yes, yes they are, my child.

Through the Eyes of a Child

Lucas has been full of little funnies lately, so I decided to do another round of “Through the Eyes of a Child.”

*The other evening I was browning pork chops before putting them in the oven. I left them a little too long on one side. Realizing this, I sighed and said, “Aww man.” Lucas looked up from coloring and said, “What, Mommy? Did you burn dinner again?” Ha! Susie Homemaker I am not.

*The other night, Lucas and Mike were having a sweet moment. Mike said, “I missed you today, Lucas.” Lucas responded by saying he missed his daddy, too. Mike said, “What part did you miss most about me being at work?” Lucas said, “Your arm.”

*Yesterday, while I was giving Caroline a bath, I heard a lot of commotion in her nursery. After I’d gotten her wrapped in her towel, I carried her into her room. There I saw Lucas in her crib (his old crib) staring at me with guilty eyes. I started to get upset, but then I took a breath and changed my tune. “Hi there, baby Lucas!” I said to him. “I’m not a baby!” He replied back. “Well you better get out of the crib then since it’s only for babies.” He looked up at me with his bright eyes and said, “I can’t know how to get out.” This made me laugh so hard! I pulled him out of the crib and he said, “I can’t know how to get out of the crib, but I know how to get in!”

*Lucas is obsessed with Kevin (the man who built our lakehouse and more recently our deck at home). He constantly pretends to “fix” our lakehouse or “build” our deck. He plays with his pretend tools and is always wondering if these are the tools Kevin uses. He constantly asks for and about Kevin even though he’s completely finished building for us. The other day it was snowing as we were walking through a parking lot. Lucas asked how it was snowing. I tried to explain the concept of weather to my 3 year old as best I could. Then he asked who made it snow. Thinking he would respond with “God,” I asked him who he thought made the snow. Instead he said, “Kevin.”

Through The Eyes of A Child

Life Happens When

It’s that time of week again! Time to share a precious story about seeing the world through a child’s eyes.

I’ve contemplated sending this particular story into one of those parenting magazines with the kid funnies.

My niece is 12 years old. She is my goddaughter and I love her to pieces! I was a senior in high school when she was born and I was over the moon that she came into the world and made me an aunt. When she first learned to talk, she called me MeMe and the nickname stuck.

We observed early in her toddlerhood that she and I share numerous similarities in personality. We’re both painfully shy, dramatic, and emotional to a fault.

I was visiting my sister and her kiddos one afternoon when my niece was about four years old. Out of nowhere, she exhibited one of her emotional outbursts. Once everyone was calmed, my sister shook her head and lamented, “You sure do have Meme’s genes.”

My niece stood puzzled. She looked down at the pants she was wearing and up at me. She looked back down at her pants and back up at mine.

Frustrated and annoyed she replied, “I don’t have Meme’s jeans. These are mine.”

Through The Eyes of a Child

Last week, I started a little project for myself and I hope you play along! To recap, I wanted a special way to record the things the children in my life say and do. I love witnessing the world through their eyes.

This week’s Through The Eyes of a Child Thursday is brought to you by my three year old.

My husband has a tattoo on his ankle. It is something neither of us really pays much attention to, but the other day, Lucas brought it up.

Mike was stepping out of the shower and Lucas was observing him.

“Daddy? Did you get your picture clean?” He wanted to know.

And by “picture,” he meant tattoo. It took awhile for that to register for us, but once we did, we got a big kick out of it. Lucas’s wheels are always turning and I love it!

What have those cute kids in your life done or said this week?

Through the Eyes of a Child Thursday

As a mother and an aunt, I’m surrounded by children. I absolutely love watching them figure things out. I love seeing the wheels turning as they discover something new.

What I love most is experiencing the world through their eyes and minds.

Recently, my sister and nephew (age 4) went to the grocery store. My sister heard the Salvation Army bell ringing and gathered some change from her purse. She gave it to my nephew and told him to put the money in the red bucket.

Puzzled, he did as he was told. This was the first time he’d ever seen the donation pail and he didn’t know what it was for. As they entered the store, he asked, ”Mom? Do we have to pay to go to Kroger, now?”

Don’t you just love the minds of kids?
